GETTING READY FOR A TRIP (FAQS)

What if I’ve never done anything like this before and don’t know anyone else going on the trip?

A typical SRC team is half rookies (first-time participants), several professional carpenters or tradespeople, men, women, students, people from all sorts of professions or trades, and parents with their children. We come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. One of the most frequent post-trip comments people make is that they were so amazed at how quickly people came together, worked well together, and made new friends. There is always a tremendous spirit of camaraderie on an SRC team. It might stretch you a bit out of your comfort zone, but you’ll be glad you did it.

What kind of sleeping accommodations are there for the workers?

Our accommodations have varied depending on the actual location of trip. For many trips, we have been welcomed by nearby churches, sleeping comfortably in their buildings. Some locations have actual bunkhouses for our use. Recently we have even stayed at a hotel. Each group will be notified of their specific arrangements and made aware of bedding required for the trip.

What about food?

We eat well. Breakfast is usually prepared at the local church or hotel where we are staying. We also prepare our own lunches and eat them on work sites. Dinners vary - sometimes we eat at the local church, sometimes we have team dinners at a restaurant, sometimes you will be on your own. Every trip varies. Information will usually be given during registration. 

What do I need to bring?

We will give each team member a packing list identifying clothing, bedding, personal items, and basic tools to bring.  For all trips, you will need sturdy work shoes or boots and work clothing that should consist of long pants and clothing that you can work in- pretend you are going to summer camp...

Are there any age restrictions?

You must be at least 18 years old to operate power tools or be on a roof or ladder. Most organizations we work with have a minimum age of 16 to be on a worksite, but often we have community work that could include all age groups. Each trip will vary.

Will I be asked to do a job that I’m not comfortable doing?

This might happen. But we start each week talking about safety and your comfort with the job you've been assigned.  Job site safety is our first priority. Our project fails if someone gets seriously injured. We emphasize with all team members that if they feel uncomfortable with any assignment at any time, they are to ask for help or to be re-assigned. Safety and your comfort is our first priority.

How do I get to SRC trip locations?

People either drive or fly. You pay your own travel costs. SRC is happy to assist in connecting volunteers in a carpool as well.
